  • Why Echo Park is no place for do-gooders

    Wednesday, January 21, 2009

All you Left-leaning, Prius-driving, Obama-voting residents of Echo Park need to find another place to live before your presence causes any more gentrification or even leads to police brutality. It does not matter if you are a community organizer or even a teacher. You are part of the problem of gentrification, says New York performance artist Danny Hoch, who took a brief tour of Echo Park at the request of the LA Times:

“The indignant people on the left fail to realize that they can be teaching in a school and volunteering and voting for Obama and contributing to their neighborhood and kicking people out on their faces at the same time,” he says. “People fail to realize that they can be a housing activist or a gay-rights activist or any kind of activist and be causing police brutality at the same time.”

It should be no surprise that Hoch’s comments are aimed at provoking discussion about gentrification as well as promoting the opening of his show, “Taking Over,” on the same subject.
