The insurance industry. Two recent national TV commercials for Aflac and Travelers insurance companies featured the nearly 85-year-old Dorris Elementary School in Elysian Valley and the sleek, new LA Mill Coffee in Silver Lake. The two spots, which were filmed separately, have paid off for both locales.

The Travelers commercial about its business coverage features LA Mill Coffee CEO Craig Min and his wife, Jean, in the interior of their Silver Lake Boulevard cafe. “Lots of our clients and customers have mentioned the commercial,” said Craig Min in an email. “It has been very good PR for us.”

Meanwhile, TV viewers may have also seen a 15-second glimpse of Classroom One inside the brick interior of Dorris Place Elementary School. The room is normally occupied by Ms. Cendejas and her class of first graders. But, on TV, child actors practice their ABCs around the Aflac duck.

Principal Susan Grant is not sure that the first graders understand what insurance is (kids, it will never make sense) and she has yet to see the commercial herself on TV. However, the school will soon see some benefits from the commercial shoot: new playground equipment made possible by a $25,000 donation.
