• A lotus-free Echo Park festival *

    Saturday, July 11, 2009

The second weekend in July usually finds Echo Park Lake brimming with tens of thousands of people attending the giant Lotus Festival. This year, as many know, the Lotus Festival been canceled and there are no lotus, which died from still unknown reasons.

However, the park will still host a festival this weekend, the Echo Park Community Festival. This scaled-down, not-a-Lotus-Festival lacks dragon boat races and fireworks * but does offer a children’s play area, many vendor and community booths, live music and the last chance to ride the Echo Park Lake pedal boats before they also disappear from the lake.

    * Update: There will be fireworks after 8 pm Sunday thanks to a last minute donation from the Dodgers.
