  • Silver Lake: Hip no more?

    Friday, January 22, 2010

The posting of a casting call on Craigslist seeking “rich, wealthy, hipster GUYS and GIRLS 21-30″ for a reality TV show set in Silver Lake has generated plenty of hipster backlash on local blogs and a few comments challenging whether the neighborhood has gentrified beyond hipness:

“Just a casual observer that the eastside art/boho/nightlife scene
appears to to continue to move east to the more affordable Echo park, Downtown, and soon coming to Boyle Heights, and maybe even Whittier,” Guest on Curbed LA

“Silverlake doesn’t feel that hip anymore, the hipster bars
are crowded with out of area weirdos, Echo park, East LA, Glendale, Highland park to name a few… The real “Silver Lakers” are 35-40 years old married+1.5 who moved on to the post hipster status that frequently find themselves running back and forth to the West side or to Armeniana on Brand and Colorado Blvd in Pass on the East flank,” RackJoe on Curbed LA.

“Incredibly lame. Hipster is actually a term used more
for insult then anyone else. I take the train to work in downtown everyday and trust me the hipsters I see dont live enjoyable lives. That is unless you think eating once per day is nice and the one time per day that you do eat its probably ramen since the rents in Silver Lake dont let them have money left over,” LA Daddy on LAist
