Mapping out 54 days of Silver Lake crime

Monday’s afternoon shooting in Silver Lake generated concerns about what many residents say has been an increase in neighborhood crime. In response to a request by The Eastsider, the LAPD is reviewing crime stats for Silver Lake south of the reservoir to see what’s going on. Still no hard numbers but these two maps show the major crimes reported from Jan. 1 through February 23 (click on the maps to view and download the maps in PDF format). The top map shows crimes north of Sunset Boulevard; the bottom map displays the area south of the boulevard. The triangles are robberies; squares are burglaries; stars are stolen vehicles.

Lt. Steven Flores, a detective with the Northeast Division, generated the maps and offered this quick analysis: “Crime in Northeast as a whole is down 9.9% compared to the same period in 2009. The general pattern is the same for Silver Lake–mostly property crimes. The 13 robberies on the Northeast map is a little high for just 7 weeks, particularly along Sunset.”
