With the exception of trees planted in the Silver Lake Dog Park, perhaps no other trees suffer as much abuse as those planted along Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park. The many empty tree wells on Sunset Boulevard serve as graveyards for dead chitalpa trees. The trees have been snapped in two, yanked out of the ground and slapped by passing MTA buses. The chitalpa’s gangly limbs have been hacked off and the tender trunks seem to prefer to lean over instead of growing straight up. Now, one of the surviving trees has even been painted pink. How much more abuse can these trees take?
