A fire this afternoon blackened a pine tree that towers over a traffic island at Sunset Boulevard and Douglas Street in Echo Park. A firefighter at the scene said it’s not clear what ignited the blaze, which broke out after 4 PM. No injuries were reported but that pine tree looks in pretty bad shape. Fire firefighters coated the tree branches and surrounding bushes with a white fire retardant foam. “It’s like we are flocking a Christmas tree,” said one fire fighter.
