The patrons of the Spin Cycle coin laundry in Historic Filipinotown might find themselves fluffing and folding underwear before an audience later this week. The laundry located in a Beverly Boulevard minimall will serve as the stage for Laundromatinee, a dance performance by the Collage Dance Theater. The piece by Heidi Drucker has been performed in laundries across the country, including a New York show pictured above, since it made its debut in Santa Monica in 1988. The Collage Dance company has made a name for itself by sending dancers and audiences into unusual venues, including the Echo Park United Methodist Church and the Los Angeles Police Academy in Elysian Park. Liliane E. Ribeiro, the company’s managing director, said the Spin Cycle owner did not mind hosting the shows:
the owner and came by the next day to talk about it and he was a really nice guy and open to the idea of performances in his business space. The Laundromat will not be closed, and so people can do their laundry if needed while watching the show. J On a side note, we really want to engage the community and had flyers made in Tagalog, Spanish and English!”
