El Sereno residents will gather Wednesday morning to celebrate the completion of a long awaited $54 million bridge at Valley Boulevard and Alhambra Avenue. Motorists for decades faced lengthy delays to allow freight trains – as many as 30 a day – to cross Valley Boulevard. A bridge was an obvious solution but getting it built tested the patience of El Sereno residents and leaders, who had to wait about 30 years for the project to finally get funded and built. The eastbound lanes opened in January 2009 but now the westbound lanes – including some El Sereno-related artwork – have also been completed. The El Sereno Middle School marching band is scheduled to play Wednesday morning as fire trucks cross over the newly completed bridge, according to a press release issued by Councilman Jose Huizar.
