Trash brings neighbors together

This morning’s Echo Park Clean Up brought together residents from near and far to sweep up trash, pick weeds and paint out tagging. One group of six volunteers – mostly from Echo Park and a helper from Los Feliz -tackled Sunset Boulevard from the Glendale Boulevard bridge to Alvarado Street, which is often a vortex of trash and grime. Most of the volunteers – Helen Lessick, Morgan Hanner, Shannon Prior, Thais Camacho, Remy Schrader and Anibal Koliren – had never met before the clean up. But they seemed to work pretty well together as they picked up cigarette butts, bottles filled with icky liquid and an occasional condom or two. Most troublesome, however, were the patches of weeds, which collected and hid more trash. But the volunteers – which hailed from Echo Park Avenue, Ewing Street, Morton Avenue and Reservoir Street – left their section of Sunset Boulevard pretty tidy by the end of their shift.
