Students from across Council District 14 – which stretches from Eagle Rock and Highland Park and El Sereno and Boyle Heights – were honored Sunday for their academic achievement as part of the 2010 Adelante Awards program. The awards sponsored by Councilman Jose Huizar are given to two top students – a male and female – from each school as determined by their principal. The students and their parents were honored at a breakfast and award ceremony Sunday morning at the Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral. In addition, Wilson High School Senior Adrian Mendez, who will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall, received a $1,000 scholarship. “The focus of the event is really to acknowledge the kids and their families for their efforts,” said council district spokesman Rick Coca.
