So any of you "Dirty Harry" wannabees willing to take Lt. Buhrmester up on his offer to help reduce these types of quality of life crimes? You're either part of the solution of part of the problem, if you do nothing then you are part of the problem.

We utilize sting operations of the type you described, usually once a month at minimum. One example:

http://www.theeastsiderla.com/2010/05/echo-park-bike-busts/

If you'd like to assist us in our efforts and make your community better, please contact me. One of our core values is quality through continuous improvement. We cannot implement that improvement on our own, and concerned citizens with good ideas are a valuable resource.

The police really need to do more about 'minor' crimes like this and graffiti.
It ceases to be minor when residents catch these shits in action and get shot at.
The solution is pretty simple:
Lock a bike in the park at night and wait. No doubt those same little perps will descend upon it. Pop them and it's no longer petty theft when you find their gun.
Ditto for gang tagging. There's a wall a block from me that gets hit almost every single day, the same spot incidentally where a 6 year old was gunned down last year. Paint the wall white, hide in an unmarked van, wait for armed vandal to spraypaint wall. Problem solved.
Funny how the LAPD has all the money in the world to build themselves a new police station and a fancy new park downtown, but cry 'sorry, woefully underfunded' when it comes to taking care of such low hanging fruit as these brazen criminals above.
Maybe someone should do what the city of Bell did.

In Silver LakeMy neighbor on Kenilworth, had a creepily similar incident. She tells me that she watched 2 young men walk down the driveway and around the back of the house across the street, steal a bicycle, and walk out. When she called out to the from her balcony, they shrugged her off. She called it in to the cops a few days before the above took place.

Bill Bratton's 'Broken Windows' approach to crime fighting seems especially valid here. Sometimes petty theft is just that, sometimes it is the beginning of something more. The police need to take notice. And maybe they are-- last night, 2:30am, a police helicopter was circling with searchlight. The center of the circle seemed to be Ivanhoe school.

Jesus. Taking a few moments to process this so I don't rage-comment.

In the meantime, I'm really glad this couple wasn't hurt or killed.
