Manhunt and coroner’s van has Highland Park talking

A police manhunt for a car thief late and then sighting of a coroner’s van on Figueroa Street late Wednesday afternoon left many Highland Park residents if the two incidents were connected. A woman named Jenny who lives near Figueroa and York Boulevard described the afternoon:

“We live just up the hill from there and helicopters were buzzing around for hours. Heard a rumor that it was connected to a car chase on northbound 110, which finally exited at Ave 60 and somehow ended in front of the tattoo & furniture shops at the southwest corner of the Y&F intersection. Saw a coroner’s van out there and there was a mass of people gathered … didn’t look like a good ending.”

The two incidents, however, were not connected , said  Lt.Steven Flores with the LAPD Northeast Division.

The Los Angeles County Coroner was responding to a suicide in the 6100 block of Figueroa, Flores said. He had no details on the suicide  but said it was not related to the search for a suspect who stole a vehicle in South Pasadena earlier in the day. The suspect then led police on a brief chase that ended in Highland Park.  An accident that blocked the southbound Avenue 60 exit off the Arroyo Seco Parkway was apparently related to the chase, according to the HLP90042.

“A perimeter was set up and the suspect was captured with assistance of Northeast officers,” Flores said by email.
