Occidental College enrolls in car sharing program

Occidental College staff and students – as well as residents who live near the Eagle Rock campus – can now rent a car by the day or even by the hour  through the Zipcar car sharing service.  Only two Zipcar vehicles will be available for rent – starting at $8 per hour plus an annual membership – on  campus.  But the college sees this as a step to reducing congestion and providing more options to those who can’t afford to or don’t want to deal with car ownership.  Here, according to a college press release, is how the program works:

“Zipcars can be accessed 24 hour a day and are easily reserved online. Members can also download a Zipster iPhone app to book a car, honk its horn to locate it, and remotely unlock its doors. The company uses radio frequency identification technology (RFID) to ensure vehicle security. For instance, an RFID tag on a Zipcar’s windowshield “reads” a reservation when a Zipster presses his or her membership card against it.”

Occidental spokeswoman Rhea Borja said that the college may add more vehicles if “‘there is huge interest” in the program. Click here for more details.

  1. I think this is a great idea for the college. These Zipcar’s are pretty sleak. Call, get the keys, drive it, drop it off. I guarentee that demand for this at the school is going to explode. I can’t tell you how many kids when I went there complained about not getting around because they didn’t have cars or wanted to take the bus.

Let’s face it Los Angeles is a city of driving. Plus parking on campus as Oxy is a pain and some cars never move. They will definitely need more than 2 to handle the demand but its a big step in the right direction. I wonder what the annual membership fee is?
