The gallery scene is heating up with several new shows opening on Saturday, including Brushes of Fire, featuring recent paintings by Sonya Fe (whose work is pictured above) and Margaret Garcia at Avenue 50 Studio in Highland Park. Saturday also marks the return of the Monterey Hills Jazz Festival for its 15th year while the new Boyle Heights new book shop and lending library, Libros Schmibros, hosts a reading of Wherever There’s A Fight in Boyle Heights. Tonight, the family-friendly E.T.: The Extraterrestrial will be screened outdoors during this summer’s last Atwater Movie Nights. More events in Save the Date

@ whitney. Thanks for letting me know. It’s fixed now.
This painting reminds me of a 1981 poem written by Barack Obama while at nearby Occidental College:
UNDERGROUND
Under water grottos, caverns
Filled with apes
That eat figs.
Stepping on the figs
That the apes
Eat, they crunch.
The apes howl, bare
Their fangs, dance,
Tumble in the
Rushing water,
Musty, wet pelts
Glistening in the blue.
