Storefront Report: Silver Lake restaurateur leases Echo Park space

    Friday, December 17, 2010

Jason Michaud, owner of Silver Lake’s Local restaurant,  said he has leased the former Phoenix Bakery building in Echo Park. The Eastsider reported earlier this week that workers had begun gutting the building at the corner of Echo Park Avenue and Montana Street. Building permits had been pulled for “tenant improvements”  to the existing take-out restaurant and to convert a portion  of the structure for “sales of prepackaged food only.”  At Local, located on Sunset Boulevard near Parkman Avenue,  patrons can select from an organic, take-out salad bar and also order some classic items made with high-end ingredients, such as a $13 Sloppy Joe made out of slow-cooked heritage pork with onion confit queso fresco.  Still, it’s not clear what Michaud has in mind for the Echo Park restaurant.  He said details will soon be available.

Who will be first to throw out the ubiquitous complaint about gentrification?
