What could be cooler than Silver Lake? How about HaFo SaFo?*

Silver Lake resident and urban farming expert Kelly Coyne  reports that the neighborhood’s twirling Happy Foot/Sad Foot sign  at Sunset Boulevard and Benton Way has once again been malfunctioning. Still, that has not fazed fans of the local landmark, some of whom have dubbed this section of Silver Lake “HaFo SaFo” in honor of the sign, Coyne writes in her HomeGrown Evolution blog. Coyne calls her part of the neighborhood Edendale after the former silent film colony that once straddled the border of present day Echo Park and Silver Lake. But, unlike HaFo SaFo, there’s no rotating sign to raise awareness of Edendale, giving the new neighborhood nickname a big advantage:

“Anyway, we predict that this HaFo SaFo business is going to stick, because it is so very silly and insidery.  I can’t find any HaFo SaFo mentions on Google yet, so you heard it first right here.”

Coyne’s support for HaFo SaFo comes a few months after a Silver Lake resident began promoting SOSA 101 – South of Sunset Above the 101. What will be the next break-away Silver Lake republic to seek recognition and its own neighborhood sign?

* Correction: A previous version of this post said the Happy Foot/Sad Foot sign was located at Sunset Boulevard and Coronado Street. That’s wrong. The sign is located at Sunset and Benton Way.

  1. Silverlake south of Sunset above the 101 – we’ve always called that area ‘Baja Silverlake’

  2. The sign is located at Sunset and Benton Way and not Coronado.

  3. Terrible. How about instead of Los Angeles, we call it LoAn?
    Ugh!
