Police respond to Sunday morning window-bashing in Echo Park *

Police apprehended a woman this morning after she used a hammer to break numerous windows in an Echo Park apartment building in the 1000 block of Bonnie Brae Street near Sunset Boulevard. An LAPD helicopter hovered overhead after the incident that began at about 9:30 a.m.  The woman sustained injuries from breaking the windows but no other persons were injured, said Sgt. Michael Mabie with the Rampart Division.

* Update: Officers arrested 60-year-old Mary Shabazian, who lives in the building, reports Lt. Wes Buhrmester with the Rampart Division. Shabazian cut both of her hands after using a hammer to smash the windows of two apartment units. It’s still not clear why she did it.  Buhrmester has more details here.

  3. This was an unusual case, as there was no known connection between the victims and the arrestee, Mary Shabazian, 60, of Los Angeles. At 9:25 a.m., officers received a call of an assault suspect armed with a hammer, at an apartment complex in the 1000 block of N. Bonnie Brae Street. The helicopter arrived first and saw Shabazian, with the hammer, run into an apartment. The air unit crew directed responding officers to that apartment’s open door, and she was detained without incident (“fresh pursuit” applied as she was the suspect in a crime, therefore officers can enter a structure to search for her, searching those places where a person may conceal themselves). She was cut on her hands, and a bloodied hammer was found on the floor. It turned out to be her residence.

The investigation revealed that Shabazian, for unknown reasons, broke the windows of two adjacent apartments. Those residents advised of no prior disputes with Shabazian or a motive for her actions. Both residents called 911 as they did not know if she was going to enter their apartment. She displayed objective symptoms of some type of intoxication.

Shabazian was treated for her cuts and booked at 77th Street Jail Section for vandalism. Other than her, there were no injuries. Detectives will speak to her later and try to ascertain her motive, and if it involves mental instability or substance abuse, initiate the appropriate actions.
