  • What does the “G” in the “Highland Theatre” sign stand for?

    Thursday, January 6, 2011

It stands for “Gay.” That’s according to the Uptown Gay & Lesbian Alliance, whose members donated money to help with the restoration of the landmark Highland Park sign. UGLA members claimed the “G” by donating $19.24 to sponsor an individual light bulb or made donations to the Friends of the Historic Signs of Figueroa Street, which launched a campaign to repair the 1924 sign that stands above the Highland Theater at Figueroa and Avenue 56. Said the most recent issue of the UGLA newsletter:

“Those in-the-know will understand that the ‘G’ shines brightly because of the generosity of UGLA members!”

Most of the other letters in the theater sign have been claimed except for the “N,” which can be yours for $1,000. Click here for donation details.

I’m just wondering why didn’t Uptown Gay & Lesbian Alliance donate to sponsor the “L” too?
