There are two ways to get to a newly listed, four-bedroom house in the Fellowship Park section of Elysian Heights: One is down a footpath that changes from brick to gravel to dirt as it descends down a steep hill; the other is a short drive on Fellowship Parkway, a winding road so narrow that an SUV would have trouble squeezing through. But it’s that sense of seclusion on a wooded hillside that has drawn people to Fellowship Park for the past century, including Rev. Benjamin Fay Mills, founder of the Los Angeles Fellowship, a man historian Carey McWilliams said helped bring the metaphysical movement to the city. It’s not clear what Mills paid in the early years of the 20th Century when he purchased the hillside that became known as Fellowship Park. But, today, joining that fellowship of property owners has become quite pricey. The asking price for that nearly 3,000-square foot home on Fellowship Parkway is $829,000.
Hawks are apparently not afraid of SUVs. This hawk spent at least five minutes this morning perched on the hood of a vehicle on Vista Gordo in Elysian Heights.

The sandstone cliffs that have lined Sunset Boulevard through Echo Park and Silver Lake for the past century are collapsing. The Eastsider reported a year ago when a 20-foot chunk of the cliff on the north side of Sunset near Coronado Terrace toppled to ground during a storm. Last month, the steep slope west of Benton Way collapsed, blocking the sidewalk and spilling into the roadway. After the February 2010 landslide, a city engineer reported that “the oversteepened cut slope is a public safety hazard” and that “in the long term, the slope needs to be stabilized.”
That city engineer is far from the first person who has warned about the need to prevent the walls of sandstone from tumbling onto Sunset Boulevard. In fact, these slopes began collapsing and crumbling almost as soon as the hills were cut and graded in the late 1880s to form a channel that would one day carry Sunset Boulevard and spur the development of Echo Park and Silver Lake.
A Silver Lake woman emerged from her shower this morning to discover that burglars had broken into her house near Benton Way and Berkeley Avenue , stealing thousands of dollars in jewelry and musical equipment. The woman was unaware of the crime until she finished bathing, said her boyfriend in an email. The man said his girlfriend is fine but wanted to alert neighbors to the daytime crime, which the boyfriend described as a “pretty audacious move.” The burglars entered through an open bedroom window at about 10 a.m. One of the stolen items included a guitar valued at about, $1,000.

Cars and trucks don’t have to be new or expensive to attract the attention of thieves. That’s what an Angeleno Heights man named Thomas and girlfriend learned Thursday morning. Thomas, who wants to warn neighbors of the theft, provides details of the crime:
“My girlfriend’s relatively nondescript tan Toyota Corolla was stolen last night/this morning (2/24) in the Angeleno Heights area, right around Bellevue Ave. and East Kensington (near Bob’s Market). She is out of town at the moment, so I’ve been moving both of our cars for street cleaning. I moved her car around 8:30 p.m. last night, made sure the doors were locked, etc. and the next morning it was gone. There wasn’t any sign of broken glass and another car was parked in it’s place, so the theft must have been relatively early in the evening. We’re both just a little awestruck. I filed a police report with the Rampart Division and will keep my ears and eyes open if for some reason, it has stayed in the neighborhood. Not sure how often car theft occurs in the area (we’ve been here for four years), but I just want to remind people to be vigilant.”
KindKreme, a vegan ice cream and dessert shop, opened its Echo Park outlet today in the former space once occupied by the raw vegan restaurant Mooi, which closed late last year after only a few months. Today’s cold and rain was not ideal for frosty desserts. Still, vegans and the curious came by to check [...]
Sebadoh performs tonight at the Echoplex, Echo Park By Alfred Montez Although February is the shortest month of the year there’s no reason why we shouldn’t celebrate getting through it by going out this weekend and cutting loose to some good live music. It seems that nearly every person in Echo Park sports at least one tattoo, tributes to lovers, bands, gangs or the legacy of one too many drinks. But how do you explain what motivated an Echo Park man to have the words “Echo Park Book Club” scrawled across his tummy? That man, named Jason, was [...]
