Saint Fransis of Assisi Catholic Church in Silver Lake was the site this afternoon of a mass and prayer service for Juan David Vasquez Loma, the 25-year-old restaurant worker who was shot last Sunday morning while driving on Silver Lake Boulevard. Loma, who was dropping off co workers when he was shot, was declared brain dead last Tuesday as officials awaited his family from Mexico to arrive. Today’s service was organized by El Chavo restaurant, where Loma worked as a busboy and waiter. Police believe the shooting is a case of road rage.
Loma’s mother, Maria, and aunt, Adela, attended the service in addition to his girlfriend and friends, who were dressed white in his honor, said Melanie Tusquellas, owner of El Chavo. Tusquellas said Loma’s mother has decided to take her son off life-support systems on Sunday and to donate his organs. His body will eventually be transported to Mexico.
“The mass was somber and reflective,” Tusquellas said of the service that attracted between 150 to 200 people. “Most of the service was in Spanish, with a touching sermon from the parish Deacon honoring David’s life and character and a stern plea from Father Vincent to help find the killer who murdered Juan David.”
Donations are being accepted for a victim’s fund set up in Loma’s honor.
