A full-length test will be given, and students will receive their test results the following week. The PSAT is also called the NMSQ, or the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Scoring well on the PSAT can get you a National Merit Scholarship. Recommended for 8th to 10th grades. All students must bring their own calculator. REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

For the second time this week, police have closed off streets in Angeleno Heights and an LAPD helicopter is hovering overhead as officers search this morning for a burglary suspect who eluded them two days ago. This morning’s search began after 10 a.m. when detectives spotted the man — described as a light-complexioned, male Latino with no shirt and black shorts – who is believed to live in the area, said Lt. Wes Buhrmester with the Rampart Division. “We think he’s contained within someone’s backyard,” Buhrmester said.
Residents should call 911 if they see him. A police canine unit is on the way to assist in the search.
Last night, a helicopter hovered over Angeleno Heights during another police search. One resident was told it involved a burglary suspect but Buhrmester had no details about that incident.
Update: The suspect was apprehended shortly before 1 p.m. near Sunset Boulevard and Laveta Terrace, said Buhrmester. He provided more details about the suspect:
Arrested was Joseph Gutierrez, 34, Los Angeles. He was booked at our Metropolitan Detention Center for burglary, due to a crime reported at 12:15 am on September 28, 2011. He was chased two times prior to today, thus the conflicting reports of his being in custody. He is also being investigated for up to four other break-ins in the Sunset Blvd. area in the last week or so. He is not known to have hurt anyone, and is believed to be involved only in property crimes.

The red brick walls of the Boyle Hotel – known to many in Boyle Heights as the Mariachi Hotel – have been shrouded under scaffolding and a black veil for several months now. Under that black screen, designed to keep down dust, construction workers are transforming the interior of the 1889 Boyle Heights landmark into 31 affordable apartments that will overlook Mariachi Plaza at First Street and Boyle Avenue.
What does the old hotel, built by George Cummings, look like under the veil? Ernesto Espinoza, Director of Real Estate Development for The East Los Angeles Community Corp., the nonprofit developer in charge of the $24.6 million project, gave The Eastsider a tour of the Victorian Italianate-style building, which is scheduled to once again house residents by May 2012.

After publishing close-up photos of Echo Park Lake nearly emptied of water earlier this week, today it’s time to pull back several hundred feet with this aerial shot taken by Steven Nereo on Wednesday. Nereo took the shot during a helicopter ride across the city. Those fan shapes appear to be where earth movers have begun to scrape away the muck from the lake bottom. A mother and her 3 kittens moved into our yard in Echo Park a month ago and while they are VERY cute, we need to find them homes. One of the kittens disappeared a couple days ago, so there are 2 left. I think the black and white one is a male since he is 
bigger than the other one; he is very curious and really adorable. The other one is a multicolored kitty who seems like she would be happiest living her life on someones lap.
It’s only a matter of time before they start breeding, so the clock is ticking! I have already checked with everyone I know, and the only no-kill in the area (Glendale Shelter) only takes cats 1 year or older. They are cute to an insane degree and I wish I could keep them, but I have an elderly cat who despises all non-human creatures.

Renowned Austrian guitarist Thomas Leeb is anything but ordinary. His technique has been likened to a wild trip on an acoustic roller coaster. Leeb himself often refers to his unconventional style of acoustic percussion guitar tapping as “the bastard child of acoustic guitar.”
This Saturday, Oct. 1, Leeb will showcase his captivating style at The Fretted Frog, Echo Park’s very own alternative acoustic guitar store.
