Two more candidates – a real estate agent and community activist from Atwater Village and an attorney and activist from Echo Park – have filed paperwork indicating their intention to run in the Council District 13 election in 2013.  Rueben Martinez of Atwater and Josh Post of Echo Park are  now among the four candidates seeking to replace Councilman Eric Garcetti, the Silver lake resident whose is termed out of office and is now running for mayor.  The two other candidates for Council District 13 – which includes Echo Park and Silver Lake as well as Atwater Village and Glassell Park – are Silver Lake activist Scott Crawford and Mitch O’Farrell, a Glassell Park resident and senior adviser to  Councilman Garcetti.

Martinez is a real estate agent for Keller Williams and is also a representative on the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council.

Post, according to his Facebook page, is a deputy attorney general with the California Department of Justice, and has been involved in efforts to improve the Glendale Boulevard in Echo Park.

Meanwhile, in Council District 1, where Councilman Ed Reyes is termed out, three candidates have officially launched campaigns:  Council District 1 chief of staff Jose Gardea; State Assemblyman Gil Cedillo; and Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council board member William Morrison.  Council District 1 includes portions of Echo Park, Lincoln Heights and Highland Park.

  1. How about The Eastsider interview the potential CD13 candidates in depth about their platforms? I’d prefer that over a useless piece of trash heading to the recycle bin with a face and no agenda.

CD 13 may not look the same after city of LA redistricting. There will be meetings tomorrow Sat. in CD 1 and Jan. 9 CD 13. We all should testify to keep communities of interest together. Echo Park was split up in the Congressional Redistricting process. As a member of the LAUSD Redistricting Commission I hope the Eastsider and other publications post our meetings for community input. BTW Hearing that Senator Kevin de Leon will also run in CD13. Keep us posted on City and School District meetings.

  3. I am thrilled about Mitch running! Mitch knows the neighborhoods and cares about them. GREAT NEWS!

  4. Kevin De Leon? No “professional” politicians, please.

  5. Mitch O’Farrell does NOT care about Echo Park -we’ve had bad dealings with him and made us feel like our concerns were not valid and we were wasting his time. And he’s impossible to get a hold of. NO on Mitch!

  6. Developers, Real Estate Agents, Career Politicians … ? Most Folks begin their Interest in Echo Park with a Tour of some of Her Older Houses and Infrastructure; a little History, and a Bite to Eat at Barragan`s Mexican Restaurant. Preservation and Restoration, Community Support, Patronization of Established Business Community( Dodger Stadium, Latino Restaurants, Convenience Stores … * ) Education, Health Care, Social Services, Employment *. I. say we get out The Green Dickies and The Poster Boards, before Wee let the Wide Eyed driveling Painter Pants clad Heads from the West Side start Revving the Bulldozers and Nail Guns !

  7. Kevin De Leon? That carpetbagger probably still doesn’t know his way around the neighborhood.

He registered to run as a “resident” while crashing on the couch of my tenant, a staff person in Gil Cedillo’s office.

I never met did meet him, even though he was allegedly living next door.

Heck, that guy may owe me some rent money…
