A Latino gang member who was arrested last night in Glassell Park during a SWAT team operation had taunted a trio of African Americans with racial slurs and then threatened them with a shotgun, police said this morning. Ivan Alquicira, 19, was booked on assault with a deadly weapon charge after the SWAT and Northeast Division gang officers took him into custody and recovered a shotgun, an additional weapon and ammunition from his residence, said Lt. Steven Flores with the Northeast Division. Alquicira and another man were on a balcony when he began yelling racial epithets at a group of African Americans who were walking in the 3100 block of Estara Avenue at about 6 p.m. The incident was apparently unprovoked and officers responded to a report on of an assault with a deadly weapon and hate crime, Flores said.
“One of the suspects produced a shotgun and pointed the weapon at the three victims,” Flores said in an email. “The suspect demanded the victims leave their neighborhood. The suspects began chasing the victims who fled the location in fear.”
The victims lived in the area, Flores said. Alquicira’s bail was set at $500,000. It is up to the District Attorney to file a hate crime enhancement to the charges, Flores said.
