Occidental College will celebrate its 125 Anniversary with a series of events that begin on Friday, Founders Day, and includes everything from academic panel discussions to a 50-foot high ferris wheel and carnival on the Eagle Rock campus. Occidental President Jonathan Veitch will also officially announce one of the largest gifts – a $5 million donation – in the history of the liberal arts college. Speaking of history … while Eagle Rock has been Occidental’s long time home, the liberal arts school – whose most famous student now holds the top job in the White House – has jumped around the Eastside over the decades. The first classes were actually held in Boyle Heights in 1888 before a fire forced the school to eventually move to Highland Park a decade later. It was not until 1914 when the first Occidental College buildings were opened in Eagle Rock. Click here for anniversary events and information.
