Boyle Heights traffic was snarled this afternoon near Lorena Street and Whittier Boulevard as motorists and pedestrians maneuvered around a van that burst into flame and  spouted thick black smoke. The van caught fire at about noon  as it waited to turn into a gas station at the intersection of Lorena and Whittier. The driver was able to get out with only minor injury. The van, however, was a total loss, despite a quick response by L.A. City Fire Department.
