The Variety Boys and Girls Club of Boyle Heights has awarded scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $15,000 to help 18 youths finance their college or vocational education. This year’s scholarships – which total $108,000 – will go to students who will or are already enrolled in a wide variety of colleges, from Santa Monica College and Cal State L.A to U.C. Berkeley and Yale.

“We heard stories about a student commuting by bus daily to Santa Monica College from Boyle Heights, a student who fished to provide food for his family, and the straight “A” student who will become a doctor and return to the community to help others,” said Floyd Coverston, Variety Boys and Girls Club Board Member and Chair of the Scholarship Committee, in a press release.
