Police seal off Highland Park streets during search for murder suspect*

Squad car blocks street. Photo by Highland Park resident

Police in Highland Park apprehended a possible murder suspect this afternoon after sealing off streets near Avenue 52 and Irvington Place.  The Northeast Division’s Twitter feed at about 5 p.m. had advised residents to “stay away” from the area as officers set up a perimeter and brought in police dogs to assist in the search. But about 45 minutes later police notified residents that a suspect had been caught. It’s not clear if the suspect who was apprehended today was connected with Saturday night’s lethal shooting near Monte Vista Street and Avenue 53.

* Update: Police confirm that the person who was apprehended is a suspect in the Monte Vista Street killing.

  1. did this turn into an arrest behind the Highland Theater?…. I happened to see undercover cops “taking down some perps” there.

  2. This was not behind the Highland Park Theater. I saw maybe 15 police cars head down El Paso with a canine unit around 4:30. There was the usual helicopter overhead for maybe 45 minutes and from time to time I heard the cops on a loud speaker. It looked to me to be around El Paso and Avenue 50 but Irvington Place is near there. Glad they got the suspect. And happy to find out here what was going on.

  3. my roommate said the police were on loudspeakers telling residents not to leave their homes yesterday around that time. we live off york & irvington. the night before, we had LAPD overhead for quite some time, and heard a lot of pops which didn’t sound quite like the firecrackers that get fired off on york every night – maybe they were gunshots, maybe not.

  4. My hats off to the police for nabbing the suspect within 24 hours. The men and women in blue put their lives on the line every day. Thank you NE police for tracking this guy down while causing no harm to the immediate neighbors.

  5. finally a little good news for the neighborhood.
