Memorial for victim on stairway.

Two suspects – including a 14-year-old male – have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting last week of Jose Antonio Chavez who died on an Echo Park stairway.  Armando Rosales, 19,  of Los Angeles was arrested on Friday night following a traffic stop after detectives has passed on information to uniformed officers, said Lt. Wes Buhrmester with the Rampart Division.   The 14-year-old juvenile turned himself over to police about an hour later at the Rampart station.  The suspects and 35-year-old victim knew each other.

“The suspects are believed to have gang affiliations, however, the motive was not necessarily due to that,” Buhrmester said. “Information tends to indicate the shooting arose from a personal dispute, not related to gang activity.”

Rosales was booked at the Metropolitan Detention Center, while the juvenile was booked at Eastlake Juvenile Hall, both for murder with a firearm.

The shooting that took place Wednesday morning on a public stairway near Bellevue and Belmont avenues. Some nearby residents said they heard at least gunshots.
