No criminals here, just us real estate agents

A police helicopter hovered over the 2300 block of Loma Vista Place in Silver Lake on Tuesday afternoon after a  resident reportedly came across three men in her home. But it turned out these guys were on the prowl for real estate,  not laptops, according to the LAPD Northeast Division Twitter feed:

Police activity, 2300 blk Loma Vista Pl (Silverlake). Woman went home, discovered 3 men inside. No crime, realtors only.

It’s not clear who the agents were working for or what home they were touring. There are no homes for sale in the 2300 block of  Loma Vista Place, where properties are reachable only via a public  stairway.  Meanwhile, real estate agents with nearby listings said none of their clients had reported coming across an unannounced trio of wandering real estate agents.  The watch commander at the LAPD’s Northeast Division  said this morning that all he knew about the incident was that no crime had been committed.

Perhaps some agents got the wrong address and day for the broker caravan?


  1. No crime? Realtors only? I’m sorry to point out something so simple but if the person who occupies the house came home and found three men in her house then I’d say that’s trespass and they should be charged.

    And I’d like to see them named and shamed…who wants people like that around?

  2. I do not understand how these guys just got let off, what if they were about to rob the place and just had a slick story to tell the police, especially if no one even knows what agency they work for, how were they truly verified as agents?

    • Because there was no crime committed and the police were able to verify their identities and the occupant/homeowner didn’t think it necessary to press charges.

      Just hunch, but goodness knows the LAPD wouldn’t miss the opportunity to haul someone in.

      Just because the information wasn’t available to the watch commander when the news called, doesn’t mean that it wasn’t thoroughly checked.

      • good news everyone! according to eodanon, breaking and entering as well as trespassing is not a crime anymore!

        • Actually, with the information given I do not see any crime committed.
          First of all, it is only classified as breaking and entering when an individual intentionally bypasses, dismantles or otherwise compromises the integrity of a secured enclosed property with intentional and/or forcible action BEFORE entering said property. If the property was not secured (IE. Locked) they could only be charged with trespassing. However, if there was no clearly posted sign which stated “NO TRESPASSING” or similar statement of notice, trespassing can only be charged if the individuals refuse to leave AFTER being notified. So, since there was no crime committed within the home, they did not make forcible entry into the house and they did not refuse to leave after being asked, there was no crime committed therefor no charges filed. Accidents do happen, and I cannot see these 3 individuals being released without having their identities verified by the LAPD. In this case, the way it is percieved is that there was no malicious intent and no damage done to the property. There are no grounds for criminal charges therefor they were let loose. The most the resident could do would be to issue a verbal trespassing warrant which would prevent them from legally being allowed to return to the property. If they did return after a trespassing warrant was issued, they would then be subject to criminal charges.

  8. It looks like they were scoping out a foreclosure on that block… investors and their cohorts tend to congregate and hover around properties like hawks when they come up for auction

  9. Yes, but how did they rule out the chance that it could be thieves casing the place with a clever story and disguise? I understand that the police could check their DRE license, but with no info on who they are or what agency they work for, did that even happen?

    • Larry you’re making all sorts of assumptions about what *wasn’t* done. The occupant and the police were both satisfied, that right there says enough that everything was sorted out.

      Now if the place *were* to get robbed I’d say they have a pretty short list of suspects, no?

  10. The DRE number is one way to initially check a person’s claim. Also the public must bear in mind that all “legitimate” agents are required to submit fingerprints when becoming licensed, in order to circumvent this type of confusion. So in the event of any wrongdoing the police can always cross-check a person’s claim with their fingerprints on file with the state of CA. And stair street or not, one should always be wary of leaving their house unsecured as many robberies occur during daylight hours, when thieves suspect the occupant is away at work or school.

  12. Those ‘real estate agents’ are lucky it wasn’t my house they stumbled into. They would be perforated real estate agents.

  13. The property was foreclosed and the owner has not left the property, realtors
    Had the proper paperwork and met with the resident of the house while police were stood by.

  14. It appears there is a property at 2376 Loma Vista that is scheduled for a foreclosure auction on September 26, 2012.

    That doesn’t mean that anyone should be allowed to snoop around the property and potentially enter the home.

  15. Why does the police report list the neigh borhood as “Silverlake” (sic)? It is two words: Silver Lake. Would they list neighboring areas as “Echopark” or “Losfeliz”?
