Los Angeles police officers have blocked off Glendale Boulevard in both directions next to Echo Park Lake early this evening as they search for an armed robbery suspect. All surrounding streets — Alvarado, Temple, Bellevue and others — are jammed with cars, trucks and buses whose drivers are trying to find their way out of the mess. Meanwhile, residents who live at or near the intersection of Clinton Street and Belmont Avenue, including those at the Lago Vista condos above Echo Park Lake, have not been able to reach their homes because police sealed off streets where they are conducting their search. One officer who was diverting traffic at Glendale and Bellevue Avenue said one suspect was still at large shortly after 6 p.m.
A black sedan (pictured below) believed to be connected to the search could be seen behind police lines on Clinton Street near the Lago Vista complex.
* Update: Five suspects, including a 16-year-old driver, were apprehended, said Lt. Wes Buhrmester of the Rampart Division in a comment to this post. “This incident began as a strong-arm robbery at 4:20 pm, at the restaurant at 534 N. Hoover St. Three young males got out of a black Ford Fusion and accosted a pedestrian, robbing him of his laptop. They got into the car and left. A bystander recorded the license plate number and phoned the police. The car, with a disabled persons license plate, turned out to have been reported stolen in Buena Park earlier today.”
