The view from the bottom of Echo Park Lake

Photos by Martin Cox

It’s hard to believe but the photo above shows the spot where Echo Park Lake’s lotus bed once blossomed before the plants died off and the lake was drained and reconstructed as part of a multimillion clean up project. Now, the same location resembles a giant swimming pool under construction or, as photographer Martin Cox noted, the Martian landscape as viewed by Curiosity. The lake should start looking like its old self–albeit with the addition of new wetlands–by next spring when it will be refilled with water.

  1. How appropriate that Nilsson’s “Down” starts playing on my stereo as I’m reading this article.

  2. Did Echo Park Lake have a running trail around it? Did not live in EP at that time and don’t recall there being a jogging route like there is around Silver Lake Reservoir?

  3. Will there be a ceremony reopening the lake after the gazillion dollars spent. Free hot dogs para todos!
