Passengers riding the Gold Line this weekend through Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles became part of the audience for a series of performances presented by Meet Me @Metro III, which is billed as “a celebration of transit and performing arts.” Shows by different theatrical companies were staged at four different stations, including Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights. While musicians played below ground in the station, members of Opera del Espacio, which includes students and alumni of Cal State L.A., turned Mariachi Plaza above into a stage for a performance piece about mobster and former Boyle Heights resident Mickey Cohen.
“These performances are always in relationship to the audience and the actual space of the event, often incorporating the audience into the live creation,” said Tanya Kane-Parry, Opera del Espacio’s artistic director, in a press release.
