Silver Lake residents near Coronado Terrace and Kent Street were told to stay indoors tonight as police blocked off traffic and searched an apartment building, according to neighbors. The Rampart Division had no information about the incident and a police helicopter has left the area but at one point residents said officers appeared to be searching an apartment complex at the corner at about 7 p.m. “The copter finally gone but still cops patrolling streets- no one allowed out of houses, area cordoned off- no one in or out,” said one woman who was told by police to stay inside.
Police were in the same area on Friday night as they searched for a gunman who was not found.
* Update: A suspected gang member carrying a gun was apprehended, said Rampart Officer Brad Gorby in a comment to this post. He provided more details:
At approximately 6:30pm, officers from Rampart Division’s Special Problems Unit went in foot pursuit of a gang member who was carrying a loaded handgun. The suspect attempted to hide under a car in the area of Coronado and Marathon. The suspect was located with the help of K9, and the loaded stolen gun was also recovered. The suspect was booked on the weapons violation.
