Ballot Box: When in doubt, bring in the kids and dogs

The final flurry of campaign mailers before Tuesday’s March 5 municipal elections reveals that some of the candidates in the Council District 1 and Council District 13 races are drawing upon their family and furry friends to woo voters.  A mailer for Council District 13 candidate Jost Post includes several pictures of prominent supporters, including L.A. County District Attorney Jackie Lacey and actor Ed Begley, Jr.  But those images are relatively small when compared to a photo of Post’s dog, Hugo.  Meanwhile,  in the Council District 1 race,  State Assemblyman Gil Cedillo–who has raised more than $376,000 in contributions, attracted $281,000 in independent expenditures and received $100,000 in city matching funds–hit up supporters for more money this week using his grandchildren. In an email featuring a mailer of his granddaughters, Rubi and Hannah, Cedillo pleads for more cash:

Help us finish strong, your contribution of $10, $25, $50, $100 or more will help me pay for my last mail pieces to communicate to voters such as this one with my two granddaughters who are the most part of my life. Contribute NOW!

Meanwhile,  Council District 13 candidate Emile Mack is leaving no one out, with his mailers including a picture of him with a child and dog.

At least there have been  no photos of candidates kissing babies or dogs. But there’s always the runoff campaign.

  1. What a cute pup!

  2. Also, when in doubt, airbrush away the ominously dark circles under your eyes, in some but not all mailers.

Furthermore, I hope Gil didn’t pen that mess of a sentence himself.

  3. Hugo Post is adorable, but Arthur O’Farrell reigns…sorry, Hugo.

  4. Funny article. I would vote for a politician if it showed him/her with their mutt walking out of the local pound where they just adopted him. A happy local leader leading his human out of Lacy Street all the way to city hall!

  5. Don’t be hating on pic…
Its showing his a family man, including family dog, dude!
