In the far north end of Atwater Village, a few blocks but a world away from shopping madness at the Costco-Best Buy-Toys R Us shopping center, a cluster of stables near the L.A. River cater to the equestrian set.  Now, a portion of one of these stables with river frontage is up for sale at an asking price of $1.39 million.

The River Ridge Stables are owned by a Take The Reigns, a non-profit equestrian program that  teaches middle and high school girls from low-income families confidence, leadership and team-building skills.  Take The Reigns will remain on part of the property and sell off an approximately 37,000-square-foot wedge that includes more than 40 stables, a barn and corral space.  The sale will help the program, which will serve about 250 girls this year, to raise some cash and also put to underused stables to use, said Executive Director Jane Haven.

If potential buyers think that perhaps they can turn the stables and barn into hay loft-style housing, they better think twice. The property is zone for equestrian use and it will have easy access to a L.A River bridge that will be reserved for people and horses, Haven said.
