Echo Park taqueria recovers stolen Dodger artwork

Orel Hershiser drawing by Armando De La Torre, Jr./Guisados restaurant

The large drawing of legendary Dodger pitcher Orel Hershiser  is once again hanging in the dining room of Echo Park’s Guisados taqueria a week after thieves grabbed it off the wall and ran off  with the canvas.

The 24-inch by 36-inch drawing, which was created  by the son of the restaurant owner,  was returned  last week to the Guisados in Boyle Heights after the restaurant used its Facebook and Twitter accounts to spread  word about the theft  and a surveillance camera photo of a suspect dressed in Dodger shirts

“It is back on display at Echo Park,” said Armando De La Torre, Jr., who used a black Sharpie marker to create the drawing for his father’s restaurant. “We’ve taken some measures to make it at least more difficult if someone wants to try and steal it again.”   Those measures include adding more surveillance cameras.

De La Torre declined to provide any information about the person who returned the drawing to the Boyle Heights restaurant on Wednesday night. “We did nothing more to thank them for having a bit of heart to bring it back,” he said via email. “We advised them they are no longer welcome at any of our restaurants.”

The drawing suffered a few scratches but is in overall good condition, said De La Torre.

“I couldn’t tell you how many people in the restaurant asked about the work and shared their happiness when they noticed it was back on the wall,” he said.
