91 Boyle Heights street trees on the chopping block

City tree cutting crews were busy in Boyle Heights this weekend, sawing  and hacking down street trees along the 1800 block of East First Street near Mariachi Plaza. It’s part of a project that will remove 91 trees along First Street and improve cracked and broken sidewalks, according to the Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council.

Two new trees will be planted for each cut down. But fans of the laurel and other street trees vented on the  All Roads Lead To Boyle Heights Facebook page and also organized a PoeTree Day, which encouraged people to write and pin poems on the trees.
