Echo Park Lake boathouse gets whitewashed

Painters covering the the boathouse’s bronze paint with white primer

A crew of city painters today began the job of repainting the Echo Park Lake Boathouse into what’s considered a more historically-appropriate color: Navajo White.  The new color-scheme comes only about two years after the landmark boathouse, built in 1933, was painted a bold shade of bronze as part of a $1.3 million renovation. But old photos of the boathouse show a white or cream colored building, which prompted the current paint job.

A coat of stark-white primer was being applied today and will be followed up with two coats of paint, which will have more of a cream-colored appearance than the primer, said one painter. The $47,000 job is expected to take two weeks to complete.

  1. it’s a shame that the EP council – decided to spend 47K on a redundant paint job.
the photos that they based their decision on are b&w.
no one knows what the color really was !!!

HOW ABOUT: spending money on more trash compactors at the Sunset Blvd. and Echo Park intersection ??
the NE block, with the compactor-can is so clean now – yet every other side of that intersection is filthy !!
    trash overflowing.
    how ’bout it.

  2. Well I for one feel much better.

  3. Our tax dollars at work. $47,000 to paint a tiny building like this??? How is that even remotely credible? And there was nothing wrong with the former paint job. Just because it was a different color in some old pictures shouldn’t mean that we blow that kinda money. What’s wrong with people?

  4. $47,000 to paint this small building…taxpayers are getting ripped off.

  5. Maybe the 47k paint job is to distract from all the trash on Sunset. Kinda like a beacon. A beacon of a flagrant waste of money. A beacon of new canvas for gang members to defile.

  6. As I understand it the $47,000 price tag involves the paint job and other work to the building.

  7. Just more racist literature spread by the Eastsider. “Whitewash” yes you can use that in your headline but we will continue to fight the racist gang injunctions and whitewashing of Echo Park. Imperialists, go back to where you came from!

    • You still here? You should seriously consider ditching the tinfoil hat and moving out of your parent’s basement.

    • Doesn’t matter if you call it “whitewash” or not. It’s the future. Money, education and evolution will trump and overcome barbaric thug hood rat mentality. You guys are a dying breed. You bring nothing to the table but trash and filth. You defile your beautiful culture with your ignorance and violence. So do us a favor hop on the bus and check yourself into Twin Towers as you will be there soon enough scumbag!

  8. Thank goodness. The boathouse was painful to look at with that anachronistic modern paint job, and now it’s once again a handsome jewel on the shore of the lake. Compare the two photos. Look at how the tile roof POPS now. That’s what the Spanish Colonial Revival is all about: sharp contrasts between whitewashed adobe (or a visually identical equivalent) and ruddy, unpainted tiles shaped like the legs of the men who made them. It was good enough for the Mission padres, and it should be good enough for us. Welcome back, little boathouse, and thanks, City of LA!

    • Yay for wasting public money on something frivolous only a few care about!
Yay for a color that will be tagged and vandalized much more easily!

    • Sorry, it looked much better in the reddish adobe color. Not anachronistic – deep earth tones have been used for well over a century in California historical buildings. The white will look dirty as hell in no time, and there won’t be funds to keep it clean. I still can’t figure out $47K for this new paint job. What a waste of money.

    That paint job looks great!

Good job guys! That pic above makes it look like it belongs at Panama’s Coastway. :)

  10. Why did they repaint the Echo Park Boathouse white/cream again. The New Improved Bronze paint looked so much better and classier. The white repaint reminds me of when Echo Park was run down and dirty. Do they want to trash it again? This was a complete waste of our tax dollars. $47,000 for white paint???
