Electrical vault explodes in Highland Park

An explosion in an underground utility vault in Highland Park tonight   prompted the closure of York Boulevard and may have also triggered a temporary power outage in the area.

The LAPD Northeast Division on its Twitter feed said that police and fire officials were investigating the underground explosion that took place at about 8 p.m. York was closed one block east of Figueroa Street.  Meanwhile, the Highland Park Twitter feed said the explosion may have also been responsible for a brief power outage that extended south to Avenue 50.

There was a sewer project that impacted that area a couple of years ago. I remember when it was stalled, due to a run-in with an underground electrical vault, which no one had any idea was there. Wondering if this incident is related to that vault.

  2. I was sitting at home down in 90065 and my lights flickered a few times at 8pm. Crazy, glad no one was hurt.

  3. Kyle, same thing happened to me. Lights flickering in 90065 right around 8pm.
