The owner of the soon-to-open Riko Method School of Piano  in Atwater Village believes you are never to young to start appreciating music. In fact, school founder Riko,  who prefers to use only one name,   offers a class for expectant mothers in their second-trimester that teaches them to  play classic lullabies. “Harnessing that knowledge of music, the mother will have the option to teach her own child the love for music,” according a school handout. But  after offering piano lessons  to pregnant moms and other students in Los Feliz for seven years, Riko is now preparing to move into a larger quarters on Glendale Boulevard in Atwater Village.

“The stretch of Glendale Boulevard is currently full of small business owners who are just as passionate about their craft and she felt that both students and herself could be inspired by an up and coming arts community,” said Eddie Mendoza of the school.   The interior and renovation of the space into a main salon for classes as well as lounge for students and a small shop is nearing completion, with the school planning a Feb. 1 grand opening.

“We’re currently bringing in some industrial and interior designers to renovate the space and a bit of an exterior facelift,” Mendoza said in an email. ‘ “The goal is to eventually become an All-Steinway academy.”

  1. Our daughter has taken lessons with the Riko school for years — she’s so wonderful and passionate about the craft. Atwater is lucky to have her.
