ECHO PARK — A Tuesday night shooting near Vista Hermosa Park left one man dead, police said. Officers responded to reports of shots fired near the 100 block of N. Toluca Street in the southern edge of Echo Park at about 8: 20 p.m., said Ray Martinez, a homicide detective with the Rampart Division. The victim, described as an 18-year-old Latino, was found later at a hospital.
The suspect or suspects remain at large, and the motive behind the shooting is unknown, Martinez said. Anyone with info on the shooting is asked the call the LAPD’s anonymous tip line at 1-877-527-3247.
Update: Lt. Wes Buhrmester with the Rampart Division provided more details about the homicide:
At 8:20 pm, we received several calls of a man shooting a pistol off an apartment balcony in the 100 block of North Toluca Street. Officers responded and secured the apartment building, and while doing so heard no shots or saw no one with a gun. However, based upon the prior reports from citizens, they formulated a plan to enter the building to check for suspects or gunshot victims.
While this was occurring, an employee from the Hospital of the Good Samaritan called the police and reported a gunshot victim had been dropped off at their emergency room, and had passed away. Due to the proximity of both incidents, the shooting location was handled as a homicide scene. Two males were detained as a result of the search of the building. No more gunshot victims were located.
The officers’ investigation verified that the decedent had in fact come from the Toluca St. incident.
The investigation is still ongoing, and is believed to be gang-related. Our detectives are still at scene canvassing for witnesses and evidence. I’ll have identification and age and such on the victim in a bit, and will fill you in if new developments occur.
