HIGHLAND PARK — The second annual Highland Park Independent Film Festival arrives this week, showcasing work by local filmmakers as well as entries from Brazil and South Africa.
The festival, which starts off with a Thursday night gala, features 35 films, documentaries and shorts that cover topics ranging from child slavery to fly fishing. There are also films with an Eastside focus, including documentaries on Boyle Heights and Highland Park.
In addition to screening films at the Highland Theatre on Figueroa Street, the festival will expand its offerings to Occidental College, which will screen The Glamour & the Squalor, a film about Rock & Roll Hall of famer DJ Marco Collins, as well as the work of several female filmmakers and a panel discussion about women in media.
