EAST LOS ANGELES — Students and staff at KIPP Raíces Academy this week celebrated being named a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School by the The U.S. Department of Education. The K-4 charter school was the only campus in L.A. Unified to receive the honor last year that recognizes “exemplary” academic performance among schools with large numbers of disadvantaged students.
The school’s approximately 545 students, who come from predominately low-income, Latino families, exceeded the averages for both the district and the state on the state assessment exam, with 82% of the KIPP students meeting or exceeding the standards in math and 78% meeting or exceeding the standards in English Language Arts, the school said in a statement.
“I am so proud of our students, families, and staff for the work that they do every day to make this vision a reality,” said current KIPP Raíces Academy school leader Chelsea Zegarski.
