East L.A. shooting leaves one dead, one injured [updated]

EAST LOS ANGELES – One man was killed and another wounded during a noontime shooting today in the 900 block of S. Laverne Avenue, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

One of the victims died at a hospital; the other suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to an LASD statement.

No additional information was provided.

Update:  Detectives say the victims, who were walking down the street, appeared to be targeted by a male suspect in what is believed to be a gang-related shooting.  After shooting the victims, the suspect got into the passenger  side of an SUV that drove northbound on La Verne.

Update on Tuesday, May 23: Compton City Councilman Isaac Galvan identified the two victims as his younger brothers who were shot in front of their mother’s home, according to CBS2. Larry Galvan died at a hospital; Dennis Galvan was shot in the foot and and survived.
