MOUNT WASHINGTON —   A man who allegedly stole a vehicle from a family member was apprehended in a basement early this morning after police sealed off an area near Oban and Oneonta drives.

The incident began when family members reported that the suspect had taken the vehicle without permission, said Sgt. Frank Gonzalez with the LAPD Northeast Division.  After being spotted by officers, the suspect drove off at a high rate of speed as police followed. He ran into a home believed to be his residence, where officers eventually apprehended him in the basement, Gonzalez said.

A police helicopter hovered overhead and K9 units were called in during the search and standoff, according to LAPD scanner traffic monitored by Eagle Rock 911.  The incident ended shortly after 1 a.m.
