Shopper & Diner: ‘Best new chef’ is at Night + Market Song; ‘pokerito’ debuts in Silver Lake; Frogtown pastries are hopping


Kris Yenbamroong of Night + Market Song in Silver Lake was named Best New Chef by Food & Wine magazine. A grilled fatty pig neck with jaew, a northeastern Thai chile dip, was declared Yenbamroong’s  quintessential dish. Food & Wine named the  The Los Angeles native described the vibe at his brightly colored restaurant as “food for drunkards” and “where you have food, beers and hang out. Like TGI Fridays, but with water bug relish.” Night + Market Song is located in the 3300 block of Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake.

  • The Frogtown restaurant scene is hopping: LA Weekly spotlighted pastry chef Sarah Lange of Elysian, a restaurant and venue in the Elysian Valley. The chef’s resumé illustrates the sweet song of success – from her start at Cake Monkey, experimentation at Hart and the Hunter, a granola-making side job that turned into her Bearclaw Kitchen enterprise, and now her position as Elysian’s pastry chef. Lange is certainly making a name for herself with the chocolate torte, mascarpone-honey cake, chamomile-milk tart with strawberries,and cherry-rye hand pies that she currently dishes out at Elysian. Elysian is located in the 2800 block of Clearwater Street in Elysian Valley.
  • What happens when you combine poke and a burrito? The pokerito. It’s the new menu item created by Chef Eric Park of Ohana Poke Co. in Silver Lake, Eater LA reports. Will it catch on like the sushi burrito? Only time will tell. The pokerito comes with marinated fish and rice wrapped in a cilantro-jalepeño tortilla. Ohana Poke Co. is located in the 2800 block of Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake.
  • With every order of the Preservation Pizza (which comes with cannellini bean puree, grilled onion and charred radicchio), Mohawk Bend will donate $4 to the Echo Park Historical Society, a local nonprofit organization that promotes and preserves the cultural and architectural heritage of Echo Park. Mohawk Bend is located in the 2100 block of Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park.
