East L.A. woman critically injured in hammer attack [updated]

EAST LOS ANGELES — A woman remains in critical condition after being attacked by a man with a hammer early this morning.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a male suspect after responding to a family disturbance call at about 2:35 a.m. in the 3700 block of Whiteside Street, said Deputy Navarro. A hammer was recovered at the scene.

The woman was transported to a hospital where she remains in critical condition, Navarro said.

This incident comes after two unprovoked hammer attacks took place earlier this year in East Los Angeles.  LASD released a composite sketch of a suspect in those attacks that took place only hours apart on March 25.

It’s not clear, however, if the two previous hammer attacks are related to today’s incident.

Update: KTLA reports that the woman’s 27-year-old son was arrested for allegedly beating his mother with a hammer while she slept.
