  • Firefighters had to cut away window security bars to rescue a 72-year-old man trapped inside a burning home in the 4900 block of Mendota Avenue in Highland Park. The man was transported to a hospital in good condition. LAFD
  • About 20 firefighters, a helicopter and a raft were deployed during Thursday’s rain storm after a resident spotted a sleeping bag on an island in the middle of the L.A. River just south of Los Feliz Boulevard. The sleeping bag, which turned out to be empty, was removed to make sure no other 911 were calls were made. LAFD
  • The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, which patrols unincorporated East Los Angeles, will deploy a $10,000 drone to provide an aerial view of barricade, rescue and other situations. Officials said the drone will not be used for surveillance. KPCC
