Bagels on a bike in Echo Park and Silver Lake; Eastside’s top female chefs; tofu dishes and breakfast restaurants


Bagels sold from a red beach cruiser? Only on the Eastside. On select days, Ari Skye sells her homemade Montreal-style bagels near the Silver Lake and Echo Park farmers’ markets and anywhere else her red beach cruiser may roam, Eater LA reports. Skye’s bagels-on-a-bike operation is called Courage Bagels.

  • Just in time for Women’s History Month comes Zagat’s rundown of female chefs who are changing the foodscape of Los Angeles’ dining scene, with two of them cooking it up on the Eastside. Jessica Koslow of Sqirl was named a “jam goddess” and “star of modern California cuisine.” Diep Tran of Good Girl Dinette in Highland Park received a nod for her “high and lowbrow American diner classics with Vietnamese twists.” Sqirl is located in the 700 block of Virgil Avenue in Silver Lake. Good Girl Dinette is located in the 100 block of Avenue 56.
  • Tofu may not suit every palate, but even those who don’t favor the soft spongy stuff might think twice after tasting the tofu dishes that these two Eastside restaurants have to offer, Eater LA reports. The legendary tofu balls at Starry Kitchen in Button Mash definitely hit the spot, with a killer crunch and velvety Sriracha sauce to boot. Then there’s Winsome’s Meiji Tofu, which is as crispy as they come. Starry Kitchen in Button Mash is located in the 1300 block of Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park. Winsome is located in the 1100 block of Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park-adjacent.
  • Here’s a rundown of Eater LA’s “Best LA Breakfast Restaurants, 2017.” The classic Silver Lake eatery Millie’s made the list for its neighborhood vibe. New tweaks to the menu and seating at neighborhood staple La Mascota Bakery in Boyle Heights also received a mention. Kitchen Mouse in Highland Park received a nod for its down-home vegetarian offerings.
